GUNA Collagen Injections
What is GUNA collagen injection??
Guna injectable collagen contains small building blocks of collagen from porcine origin. Injecting a large concentration of these small building blocks into the area where needed creates a “scaffold” improving the mechanical properties of the injured tissue. It also acts as a stimulant for new collagen to be produced in the damaged tissue. The result is new healthier tissues replacing the old damaged tissues. This makes Guna therapy ideal for degenerative joints, over-use as well as acute musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries.
How much does it cost and where can I buy it?
The treatment regime for acute MSK injuries includes 3 injections. 1st and 2nd injections 3-5 days apart and the 3rd injection a week after the 2 nd injection.
Chronic degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis will need 1 injection per week. The duration of treatment is 3-4 weeks, depending on the degree of degeneration. In severe symptomatic cases, a second round of 3-4 weekly injections might be needed a few months later.
One vial of Guna collagen costs about R200 (May 2024) from Hayfields Alpha-Pharm Pharmacy, the only pharmacy in the area that keeps stock. Discovery medical aid might cover the cost fully or to an extent. Other medical aids do not cover the cost of the collagen at this point. Doctor fees will include R250-R450 (May 2024) per injection depending on the injection site, which is covered by medical aid depending on the scheme and available funds. Please note that costs not covered by the medical aid should be paid privately.
What should I do before the injection?
Please make another appointment stipulating that the appointment will be for an injection.
Is it safe?
No allergic reactions or drug interactions have been observed so far making the injection very safe.
What should I do after the injection?
Carry on with life.
Rehabilitation exercises combined with collagen injection have the best results.
How long can I keep GUNA in storage?
The shelf life of GUNA is 3 years making it a very user-friendly product to keep at home until needed. The product is room temperature stable and unnecessary to keep in a fridge.
